The digitalization of museum services has become a prominent trend, offering modern ways to engage with national heritage. In museum governance, modernization has become a mainstream strategy to enhance efficiency and increase visitor engagement. However, the dominance of economic logic has encouraged the digital commodification of collections, raising concerns about the risk of over-commodification that may erode their cultural value. This study highlights the importance of striking a balance between economic and cultural objectives in museum management. It adopts a qualitative design grounded in the sustainable development framework, which recognizes culture as the fourth pillar. It integrates post-growth perspectives to mediate between economic aspirations and cultural and environmental sustainability. A case study approach is employed to examine the strategies for effective and sustainable museum governance at Museum Bahari in Kota Tua, Jakarta. Findings show that Museum Bahari has implemented several digitalization initiatives to expand public access to its collections. However, these efforts require further development, particularly in creating interactive evaluation models. Such models are essential to assess whether digitalization enhances visitors’ experiences and ensures meaningful learning about the historical and cultural significance of collections. By aligning digital innovation with cultural sustainability, museums can strengthen their role as both cultural custodians and inclusive spaces for public education.
