Abstract:
This study aims to understand the role of social capital in supporting the Cibuntu Tourism Village in Purwakarta, West Java. A qualitative approach, employing a case study method, was used to explore the social, cultural, and economic dynamics within the tourism village. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 12 key informants, participant observation, and documentary studies, and then analyzed using thematic analysis techniques. The study’s results revealed three main themes: the practice of cooperation as a collective mechanism for managing tourism villages, trust as a pillar of transparent and participatory governance, and the erosion of social capital that weakens identity and undermines local culture. This social capital allows communities to manage local resources independently and survive challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, social capital serves as a tool of resistance to external interventions that are not in line with the village’s values and character. In conclusion, social capital is an essential foundation for the aspirations of Cibuntu Tourism Village. It is recommended that strengthening social capital be achieved through community capacity training, transparency in governance, partnership development, and preservation of culture and the environment, so that this tourism village can continue to develop sustainably.
