Abstract:
This study explores the transformation of wet breakfast waste into liquid fertilizer at the Pullman Lombok Merujani Mandalika Beach Resort through the lens of actor-network theory (ANT). ANT is used to analyze the interrelations among human and non-human actors involved in waste management practices. By mapping the network of actors— ranging from hotel management, kitchen staff, composting equipment, local regulatory bodies, to microbial agents in the fermentation process—this research identifies how actors employ sustainable waste-to-fertilizer conversion. The research uses qualitative data collected through interviews, field observations, and analyzed by interpretative phenomenology analysis (IPA). The findings reveal that the successful integration of liquid fertilizer production relies not only on technological interventions but also on the alignment of interests among heterogeneous actors, including environmental commitments, operational procedures, and local ecological awareness through networking, actors, actants, translation, and intermediaries. This study has implications to the discourse on sustainable tourism, which are demonstrated by other actors in different hotels at the Mandalika Super Priority Destination region.
