Although having children is generally viewed as one of the most important tasks of adult relationships, particularly marriage, birth rates in Indonesia have been progressively decreasing in recent years. Some studies relate this tendency to the success of the government’s Keluarga Berencana (KB) family planning program, the economic consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has resulted in childbearing delays, and a broader trend of sexual recession. A particularly noteworthy and contentious feature of this reduction is the growing acceptance of a childless lifestyle influenced by some particular social media influencers, which contradicts traditional norms of society. This paper aims to explore the childlessness phenomenon through the lens of Islamic law, with a specific focus on Indonesia. By employing a literature research methodology, we examine religious texts, scholarly interpretations, and existing studies on demographic trends and cultural shifts. The research delves into how Islamic jurisprudence views the decision to remain childfree and how these views are reconciled with the changing societal attitudes in Indonesia. Our findings suggest that while the concept of being childfree is gaining visibility, it remains contentious within the context of Islamic teachings, which traditionally emphasize procreation. This paper contributes to the ongoing discourse by providing a nuanced analysis of how Islamic law interprets childfree decisions and the potential implications for Indonesian society.
