The Effectiveness of a Client-centered Therapy Approach in Increasing Self-awareness in Grade VII Students

Abstract:

The capacity for self-awareness is widely regarded as a fundamental attribute that all individuals, and particularly students as learners, should possess. Selfawareness, frequently designated as self-consciousness, represents the extent to which an individual is willing to acknowledge their own identity and comprehend their capabilities. However, at MTs N 4 Lampung Selatan, there are students who lack an understanding of their own condition, emotions, and abilities. Therefore, there is a need to enhance self-awareness through counseling, utilizing a client-centered therapy approach. The objective of this research is to ascertain the efficacy of counseling with a client-centered therapy approach in enhancing self-awareness among seventh-grade students at MTs N 4 Lampung Selatan. This research employs a pre-experimental design with a one-group pre-test-post-test format. The population under investigation comprises all seventh-grade students, amounting to a total of 115 individuals. A sample of 35 was selected using a cluster random sampling technique. The data collection techniques employed include questionnaires, observation, interviews, and documentation, and the data analysis techniques are normality tests and t-tests, while the N-gain score test is used to quantify the magnitude of improvement. The findings of the research indicate a discernible difference in the level of self-awareness among students before and after receiving client-centered therapy counseling. Subsequently, a t-test was conducted, yielding a significance value of P = 0.001, which is less than alpha 0.05. The calculated value of t is greater than the t table value of -23.246, indicating that the hypothesis is accepted. With an N-Gain test criteria of 0.55, the results indicate that the treatment has a moderate effectiveness with a significant but not high increase. This suggests that the provision of client-centered therapy has resulted in a notable improvement in self-awareness, although not to the fullest extent. It can be concluded that counseling with client-centered therapy is an effective approach in enhancing the self-awareness of seventh-grade students at MTs N 4 Lampung Selatan.
