Abstract:

With the growing online presence in Indonesia, particularly among adolescents, Instagram has emerged as a prominent platform that plays a significant role in shaping one’s identity. In Bandarlampung, Indonesia, a qualitative study was conducted involving 1000 adolescents aged 13-19 to investigate the influence of Instagram on the construction of their identities. Using Likert scale questionnaires, it sought to explore the participants’ perceptions. The findings indicate that Instagram’s influence is widespread, as it contributes to the development of self-perception and social relationships. While there are positive aspects such as facilitating social connections and promoting understanding of societal norms, negative consequences such as stress and social comparison also come to light. This highlights the dual role of Instagram in the formation of adolescent identity, emphasizing both self-expression and social negotiation. The study provides valuable insights into the impact of social media on the identity of young people, promoting awareness of digital well-being.
