Abstract:

The penetration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in media industries globally has transformed traditional journalism practices, reshaping content creation, distribution, and audience engagement strategies. As news organizations worldwide increasingly adopt AI technologies, from automated reporting to predictive analytics, local media outlets face unique challenges and opportunities in implementing these innovations. Using a qualitative methodology, this study investigates the adoption and implementation of AI technologies in Bandarlampung’s leading media organizations: Radar Lampung, Lampost, and Tribun Lampung. The primary goal is to examine how these local media outlets use AI technology to enhance data-driven decision making, operational efficiency, and content personalization. Through in-depth interviews with prominent media figures, firsthand observation of AI deployment, and document analysis, the research provides insights into the current state of AI adoption in local journalism. The study’s findings indicate that while AI use in these Bandar Lampung media outlets is still in its early stages, it shows promising growth, particularly in reader sentiment analysis, content recommendation systems, and basic content production automation. Tribun Lampung, as part of a larger network, demonstrates more advanced AI implementation, while Radar Lampung and Lampost are in various stages of early adoption. The research identifies the primary challenge as the lack of human resources with AI knowledge and experience in integrating these systems with existing infrastructure. This study offers valuable insights into the possibilities and challenges of integrating AI into local media operations. Practical implications include the necessity for media workers to develop AI literacy and for business models to adapt to technological innovations. The research also emphasizes the importance of collaboration between academics, tech developers, and the media sector in advancing Bandarlampung’s AI ecosystem, particularly for regional news organizations navigating the digital transformation landscape.
