Journal Information

Journal of Ophthalmic and Vision Research (JOVR) is the official publication of the Research Institute for Ophthalmology and Vision Science, Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences. JOVR is a peer-reviewed, open-access journal with the mission to disseminate research, information and viewpoints on different aspects of ophthalmology and vision science, including basic and clinical research aiming to advance the science, technology, ethics and art of ophthalmology.

The journal covers basic, translational and clinical studies related to different subspecialty fields, including cornea and ocular surface, lens and cataract, glaucoma, vitreoretinal disorders, uveitis, ocular oncology & pathology, neuro-ophthalmology, pediatric ophthalmology & strabismus, and ophthalmic plastic & reconstructive surgery. Other areas of interest include ocular imaging & surgical techniques and ophthalmic epidemiology, in addition to controversial and challenging topics. The scope of the journal is intended to include not only clinical ophthalmology but also related basic science disciplines that contribute to the science of vision.

A manuscript will be reviewed for possible publication with the understanding that it is being submitted to the JOVR alone at that point in time and has not been published anywhere, simultaneously submitted, or already accepted for publication elsewhere. The journal expects that authors would authorize one of them to correspond with the Journal for all matters related to the manuscript.

All manuscripts received are duly acknowledged. On submission, editors review all submitted manuscripts initially for suitability for formal review. Manuscripts with insufficient originality, serious scientific or technical flaws, or lack of a significant message are rejected before proceeding for formal peer review. Manuscripts that are unlikely to be of interest to the Journal of Ophthalmic and Vision Research readers are also liable to be rejected at this stage.

Manuscripts that are found suitable for publication in the JOVR are sent to two or more expert reviewers. During submission, the contributor is requested to provide names of two or three qualified reviewers with experience in the subject of the submitted manuscript, but this is not mandatory. The reviewers should not be affiliated with the same institutes as the contributors. The selection of these reviewers is at the discretion of the editors.

The journal follows a double-blind review process, wherein the reviewers and authors are unaware of each other’s identity. Every manuscript is also assigned to a member of the editorial team, who, based on the comments from the reviewers, makes a final decision on the manuscript. The comments and suggestions (acceptance/ rejection/ amendments in the manuscript) received from reviewers are conveyed to the corresponding author. If required, the author is requested to provide a point-by-point response to reviewers’ comments and submit a revised version of the manuscript. This process is repeated until reviewers and editors are satisfied with the manuscript.

Page proofs are sent to the corresponding author after final acceptance. The corresponding author should return the corrected proofs within two days. It may not be possible to incorporate corrections received after this period. The whole process of submission of the manuscript to the final decision and sending and receiving proofs is completed online. To achieve faster and greater dissemination of knowledge and information, the journal publishes articles online as ‘Ahead of Print’ immediately upon acceptance.

Journal/Association are committed to meeting and upholding standards of ethical behavior at all stages of the publication process. We follow closely the industry associations, such as the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) and World Association of Medical Editors (WAME), that set standards and provide guidelines for best practices to meet these requirements.

Effective November 5, 2024, the Article Processing Charges (APCs) for articles accepted by the JOVR will be $300.00. The APC is waived for invited articles. When authors are sent a formal notice of acceptance, they will receive a link to the online payment webpage. The APC should be paid before publication.
