Abstract:
Children are at risk of being sexually abused and targeted. Appropriate sex education from their closest environment presented by parents or teachers is in demand. However, parents and teachers have limitations in giving sex education, especially in early childhood. A specifically designed education tool has been developed to support parents and teachers in disseminating sexuality topics for kids. This study examines the effectiveness of sex education using the picture storybook “Tubuhku Berharga” among preschoolers. The method applied was a quasi-experiment with control group-dependent pretest and posttest design. In this study, the experimental group consists of 13 subjects, and the control group consists of 15 subjects. The subject criteria were kindergarten students in age range 4-6 years old. The data were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U Test. The results showed that storytelling using the picture storybook “Tubuhku Berharga” improves children’s knowledge of sexuality (p<0.001). This study implies that educators can apply the method of storytelling using a picture story book “Tubuhku Berharga” as sex education media to prevent sexual violence toward children. Further practice and policy implications are discussed.
