Knowledge E Becomes the First Signatory in MENA of the Barcelona Declaration on Open Research Information
On July 24, 2024
We are honoured to be the first signatory of the Barcelona Declaration on Open Research Information in the Middle East. As a Supporting Organisation, we are committed to upholding the Declaration’s values and goals to foster a more open and inclusive research environment.
As a Diamond Open Access publisher, we recognise the importance of ensuring that research is accessible, transparent, and inclusive. We firmly support the Declaration’s goals of making openness the default for research production and use, working with services and systems that enable open research information, and supporting the sustainability of infrastructures for open research information. This collective action will accelerate the transition to open research.
Researchers need access to comprehensive information in their field to produce high-quality research. Transparent and openly accessible research, supported by robust infrastructure, ensures that research remains holistic and up-to-date with the latest findings.
As a service provider advancing the visibility and accessibility of research produced by scholars and professionals within the Global South, we anticipate the positive impact of the Declaration’s proposals to promote diversity in perspective and research. Given the MENA region’s lack of visibility in global research networks due to disenfranchising policies and infrastructures, it is crucial to ensure that the advantages of open access research are distributed worldwide. Researchers from every region should have equal opportunities to contribute to and benefit from the global pool of knowledge. By including the Global South, open access research becomes more equitable, diverse, and effective in addressing global issues.
We look forward to supporting, contributing to, and sharing the developments born from the efforts of the Declaration.
